On Pinkies...

I'm 28-years old and I still play with dolls. I'm not ashamed of that. What started out as one Pinky Street doll has grown into a collection of more than 50 complete sets, not including the duplicates (sometimes triplicate). Included in that 50 is the super rare Gunslinger Girl, Henrietta.

...and Pullips

From Pinky St dolls, I started getting interested in Pullips, 12-inch 1:6 scale dolls that have movable joints and customizable parts. Thanks to a dear friend, I was gifted with two lovely girls. Could this be the start of yet another collection?

Another shot at modding Pinky parts

I’m no artist, nor am I a craft-sy person. That doesn’t stop me from trying though.

My customs toolbox
My customs toolbox. Some of the Pinky pieces were from sork, while others are from a lot of Pinky parts I bought from the forums

I’ve always wanted to repaint a couple of Pinky parts. I never really got to start on any of these projects because I always have something else to do. This evening however, I finally found myself with nothing to do (and no desire to go online), so I decided to give it a shot.

Working on the kitchen table
Blu tack and toothpicks. Oh yeah.

This is actually my third attempt at repainting Pinkies. The first time I tried it was on a fakey skirt. I must have used too much water or maybe it’s the fakey material, but the paint didn’t stick to the skirt.

Red shoes!
As you can see, I have a black and red theme going on.

My second attempt was to repaint Arc’s white turtleneck. I thought it would look great on black, and after buying a new set of Reeves acrylics, I went to work. This time, the paint was too thick and clumps too much. Not enough water, I guess. The brush work was atrocious and uneven. After several months in my carrying case with the other parts, the paint eventually chipped in some areas.

I see red
The hardest thing about painting Pinkies, I think, is mixing the right amount of red, yellow and white to match the original Pinky skin color. Or maybe I should ditch the red altogether?

After two painting attempts, my third still wasn’t perfect. I made several mistakes: painting with careless abandon as if I’m working on a huge canvas instead of a tiny piece of plastic. In painting the yukata top, I brushed black paint on areas that were supposed to be red.

Finished product
Athena, Pucchi and Tohru modeling the finished products

Still, it was a great experience. I know I’m a long way off from being a great painter, but at least I’m trying, right? Life is all about trial and errors anyway. And I’m definitely learning from this experience.

Yosha! Astig pati ikaw nag-momod, sige pa, inggitin n’yo pa ako! Maybe if I get inspired by you guys enough, I can finally get off my lazy ass and finish that that half-baked Pinky custom I’ve been working on since 2006 :P Sheht. Dapat gawin ko na yun, ang dali dali na ngayon nun since may series six suits na, no need to make my own.

    Love Tohru’s outfit, btw!

Whoa! Nice mods here. :3 I love the color combination on the Yukata. That’s really a great idea and makes the top more versatile. I likes me likes. :3

As for the fakey skirt. Yeah. The fakeys are too shiny for the paint to stick on it, even if you used acetone already. Try sanding it a bit so that it will have grit. Add primer or a base paint and then paint over it. Tube acrylics are interesting paints. It shouldn’t be watery not should it be too blobby. If I can quote Jamie Oliver “It’s good when it can coat the back of your spoon” :) That’s a good tip for paints. ^_~

Oh my gulay, talk about late reaction!

Kaoko: Hmp, pinagpalit mo na kasi mga Pinkies ;)

Khursten: Ah, sanding. I really should get around to buying sandpaper lol. The tube acrylics I used tends to get blobby. Or maybe I’m just using too much. I love how the red and black mix, but I need to be more careful about painting the parts lol. Uneven siya in places. Oh well, at least I have an excuse to inhale paint fumes again XD
