Life on Pinky Street

For my birthday this year, I decided to buy my grail: the Hard Gay version of the Kurohige Kiki Ippatsu by Tomy. Like the original Kurohige Kiki Ippatsu, Hard Gay is thrust inside a big black barrel, and you stick swords inside until he pops out.

I’m kicking myself for waiting this long to buy Hard Gay. I’ve been wanting to buy this toy ever since I saw the Hard Gay video about the toy more than three years ago. I balked at the price of the toy then — $30 for a fricking toy? Hell no!

That was a costly mistake, I now realize. A year after I said that, I found myself sucked into collecting Pinky Street dolls, buying and hoarding dolls like there’s no tomorrow. Nowadays, $30 is affordable. From US$30, the price of the Hard Gay Tomy toy has gone up, reaching as much as US$120 on eBay. As a limited release (and within Japan only), the toy is now a rare collectible item. I was able to chance upon a couple of sellers on eBay, and I made up my mind to finally buy my grail. At $59.99 for a second hand toy, this is pretty expensive specially since it used to cost only $30. But the craftmanship of the toy and the details are simply astounding. Hard Gay is well worth the wait.
